baltimore. two-alarm fire started just after 2:00 at a house in the 5000 block of denwood avenue. >> five people were tilled in the blaze, four of them children. one person survived by jumping from a second floor window. multiple firefighters were also injured and were taken to the hospital. we'll have an update on this story throughout the morning. some other news now. it appears having the best record in baseball means nothing when it comes to playoff time. >> things are different in this big game. the washington nationals are actually facing elimination from the 2012 playoffs. it's all a result of the pitching and hitting from a team that backed into the playoffs. kristin fisher joins us live from outside nats park in southeast d.c. she has more. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mike and andrea. you know, one more loss and it's all over for the team with the best record in baseball. but, you know, a best record doesn't mean all that much when you can't get any runs in the playoffs against the ranking

world series champs. yesterday's game, i'll tell you what, it was so frustrating to watch because therwere just so many wasted opportunities. in the words of jason, he said we were just one bloop away from a totally different ballgame. he was slightly right n. three games the nats have stranded 30 runners. they've been outscored 22-7. yesterday they left 11 men on base while getting shutout 8-0. but despite the setbacks, this team hasn't pushed the panic button just yet. listen. >> we lost another battle. we've got a couple more battles we need to win. >> we weren't the best team in baseball for no reasonable. we've got a good group of guys here. there's no doubt we believe in ourselves. >> we've done a great job all year, been a great team. we played great baseball. we have a chance to do that again tomorrow. >> i think going in tomorrow, it's going to be a lot of fun. we've got la roche hitting pretty well all year. going into tomorrow, it's

church sign add referendum petition against maryland's civil marriage protection act. voters will be asked to approve or reject the state's same-sex marriage law. gallaudet's president said some felt it was inappropriate considering her position at the school. marylanders for marriage equality are hopeful she'll be reinstated soon. they say everyone is entitled to free speech and their own opinion. 5:05. look ahead to the race for the joe biden and republican congressman paul ryan will square off in the one and only vice presidential debate tonight in kentucky. following president obama's lackluster performance last week, the democrats are hoping they can rebound while the republicans want to build their recent momentum. polls mitt romney -- polls show mitt romney has a one-point

report of the morning. >> that's why jessica is here talking about the headlines. >> good morning to both of you. investors will be focusing on the job market yet again when we get the latest unemployment numbers out of the government. investors also hoping for better earnings news after we saw problems with alcoa. shares fell on the aluminum company's cautious onlook mostly because -- outlook mostly because of a slowdown in china. the dow dropped 128 points in trading. the nasdaq was off by 13 points and the s&p 5 hundred was down by -- 500 was down by about 9. this is coming as better news. the u.s. economy grew modestly in september. the federal reserve says its latest assessment of economic conditions shows an improving housing market, helping many areas of the country last month. at the same time consumer spending was flat or up just slightly. in most of the regions surveyed. more people struggling financially are staying in their homes. foreclosure activity fell in september to a five-month low. according to realty track,

she disappeared last friday while walking to school. the f.b.i. and police discovered the body near what is described as an abandoned mining shack. pakistanis are outraged by the shooting of a 14-year-old peace campaigner by the taliban. the nation's first national peace award winner is in critical condition after taliban gunman boarded her school bus and shot her in the neck and head. the teenager has fought the taliban since she was 11 when she took a stand in favor of educating young girls. earlier today a number of pakistanis marched in the streets in a show of support for malala yousafzai. stay with us. 9news now returns in two minutes.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it's 5:15 on this friday eve, thursday morning. a cool start. yesterday was about 58 degrees. this morning it's 52 degrees here in northwest d.c. >> we have low to mid-40s once again north and west. it's going to be tomorrow night when we could have patchy fog around the region i believe. the fall season upon us. going to be a good weekend by the way to go to the pumpkin patch. sunday warmer than saturday. we'll start with the bus stop forecast. certainly a chill in the air with 40s and 50s.

a little bit of a breeze, too, under mainly clear skies this morning with the sunrise not until 7:14. still another couple of showers till we get the sunrise. by the way it's november 4th, that sunday morning when we turn the clocks back. that's when daylight savings time comes. by 1:00 58. so we'll spend the lunch hour in the 50s. northwesterly winds at 10 miles an hour this morning. we'll change to the southwest this afternoon about 5 to 8 miles an hour. temperatures will get to 63 for the high. 5:00 temperature 61 degrees. in fact, the ballgame starts at 4:07 today so the forecast first pitch, 61 degrees. dropping into the 50s here, mid- to upper 50s for the late innings. that's jacket weather, sweat shirt weather if you will. our temperatures this morning college park and crofton at 47. there's a chill in the air. gaithersburg at 45. leesburg 46. haymarket, prince william county 47 degrees. we've added burke on the map

this morning. you're at 49. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, this is wisconsin avenue northbound out of town. it is a quiet morning. generally clear skies, 52 at reagan national officially. but the wind out of the northwest at 10. there are areas which have fallen into the upper 40s. we have windchills closer to 40 degrees this morning with the humidity at 49% and the air is really dried out. dew points are now in the low 30s. our weather headline, a cool thursday, low 60s today. it's going to be kind of chilly through saturday. saturday's highs may only be in the low 60s. mid-60s tomorrow. warmer sunday. sunday we shoot to the 70s. our next chance for some showers, i think that holds off till monday afternoon. we are watching some cooler air off to the north. a little bit of this will be with us the next few days. dallas is in the 60s this morning. that air mass starts to arrive here for sunday and monday. so that will help moderate things as we finish out the weekend. but all in all, you know, if you have outdoor plans the next few days, the weather shouldn't

be too much of a factor. 63 today. it's going to be pleasant. tonight we're dipping into the 40s. maybe a few upper 30s. mid-60s tomorrow. breezy as another front comes through. that knocks us into the 30s to low 40s on friday night so we could have a decent amount of frost around north and west friday night. saturday 62. a cool day. then we recover nicely by sunday. 75 for the skins and ravens both home and then monday a chance of a shower again 75 degrees. it's 5:18. here comes monika with timesaver traffic. last night at about 7:30 there was an accident on the eastbound side of the bay bridge. it is closed on the eastbound side at route 18 with that investigation and cleanup on the westbound side as you approach the bridge span. you want to stay to the right to get around this activity. eastbound side of route 50 after the bay bridge shut down with that cleanup and investigation. let's take a live look near that spot and you can see that the bay bridge itself looks okay. not affected by all of that. but if you are heading outbound, you want to keep that

in mind for your travel plans. inbound you should be okay. let's take a look at the maps again. this time on the north side of town. no problems to report coming in from 270. we're looking good out of aspen hill, wheaton, burtonsville on route 29 and 95 as you come in from baltimore. no issues right now. we'll take one more last look, this time at university boulevard. traffic still moving well here through silver spring. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in a few minutes at 5:27. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. if you are the parent of a young girl, you're going to want to pay attention to this story. human trafficking is a growing problem around the world and even right here in the washington d.c. area. >> this is happening to girls as young as 12. deborah alfarone has the story of one woman who was bought, sold and buttallized -- brutalized by pitches. today she's an advocate for victims of this crime. >> i was beaten, raped, kidnapped, sold, beaten to the point where i miscarried and almost died. >> reporter: if you're thinking

like i, the 24-year-old asia graves isn't who you would expect when you hear you're going to meet a real life victim of human trafficking. >> they're expecting somebody who isn't put together, someone who can't speak proper english, doesn't go to college or do anything of that sort. >> reporter: this college student and now women's rights advocate is a survivor with scars. some you can see. she says her pitch took a potato peeler to her face here. she says her hell started when she ran from her drug addict mom and alcoholic dad at 16. >> the support i found was from young men as well as men who were actually pitches who told me they loved me. and they wanted to be with me and spend the rest of their lives with me. they were the family i never had, the father figure i never had. >> reporter: it's so important for moms and dads to hear. that's why she talks. >> they say it doesn't happen in the united states but i can tell you right now that i

worked with probably this year alone we've had probably about 75 to 80 girls so far from the d.c. metropolitan area. >> reporter: some get pitched out on backpage.com. she counsels victims for fair girls, a local nonprofit that helps them survive. today he held an event to get the word out. andrea powell started the organization. >> i just think no girl should be forgotten. that's what we represent, opportunities and freedom for every girl. >> everyone thinks something like this could never happen to your child but in all reality, there are more people enslaved now than during slavery. a majority of them are young women and girls. >> as young as 12 years old. president obama last month pledged about $6 million to try and stop human trafficking but graves says that's just not enough. debra alfarone, 9news. it is just about 5:22. let's take another look at the question of the day now.

it is 5:25. we're looking dry today. in fact sunny. just kind of chilly. look at the temperatures this morning. low to mid-40s in the suburbs. we're holding on to the lower 40s. windchills in the 30s with the northwesterly breezes this morning. by 9:00 we're barely to 50 in town with low to mid-40s north and west. we'll get sunshine pushing temperatures into the middle 50s here by lunch time. this afternoon you're going to be out, still need a jacket. highs upper 50s to low 60s. a brisk thursday ahead. mike and andrea, back to you. >> thank you, howard. our washington nationals are facing possible elimination from the playoffs today. >> the washington redskins rookie quarterback returns to practice. kristen berset has those stories in your morning look at sports. good morning, everybody. this isn't the way the playoffs were supposed to play out. the nationals, the team with the best record in baseball, on the brink of elimination thanks to the final team that got a

the orioles lose their first game by a walkoff all season long. yankees win 3-2 and take a two- game to one lead in the series. robert griffin iii joined his teammates on the practice field yesterday. afterwards he said he felt pretty g. he still hasn't been cleared to play sunday and will continue to be evaluated every day until then. but for how violent of a hit rg3 took against atlanta, his arrival back at practice was a welcome sign to fans, griffin's teammates and head coach mike shan handle. that's a quick look -- shanahan. that's a quick look at sports this morning. good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this thursday morning, october 11, 2012. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. thanks for joining us. hi, monika. are you cold? >> i'm freezing. >> thanks for joining us. good morning, howard. >> 1:14 in the afternoon, you're going to do something special. military time. sorry. weather wise, we've got generally clear skies out there and a chill to start your thursday morning. it is going to be a cool day. we're into the middle of october now. we get some of those days that stay in the 60s. this will be one of them. our day planner calling for sunshine all day long with a lunch time temperature of 56. we'll get to a high of 63 with a 5:00 p.m. reading of 61 degrees.

winds a little brisk this morning. we've had gusts of 13, 14. with some temps in the low to mid-40s. that's pushing wind chills in a few spots upper 30s. a few clouds in the mountains. otherwise it's been generally a clear morning out there. that's why we've got the chillier stuff. low to mid-40s now out to our west. western maryland, shenandoah valley. mountains are seeing some 30- degree readings. it's 54 on the bay in annapolis and cambridge. 44 in fredricksburg. so you get away from the bay or downtown, temperatures are a lot chillier. looking for highs a little later in the low 60s. let's check in now monika samtani. it is 5:32. timesaver traffic. >> thankyou so much, howard. i was on the phone with ray from state highway. he gave me great information about what happened overnight on the eastbound side of route 50 about five miles east of the chesapeake bay bridge. let's take a live look at the bay bridge. it was a tractor-trailer and a car at about 7:50 last night. hazmat situation ongoing right now on the eastbound side. you will have to exit at 41

kent narrows bridge and take that as your detour. exit 42 is where the accident happened. westbound if you're coming inbound this morning, you need to stay to the right to get by the activity. ray tells me everything should, be reopened at 7:00 a.m. i will keep you posted on that one. let's take you back over to the maps, this time over to the west side of town. no problems to report here on the gw parkway, 66 inside the beltway. but look at that an accident on the outer loop of the beltway. ramp to route 355. it's not actually on the beltway. it's on the ramp. truck hit a pole there. it may take a while to clean that one up. let's take a live look outside one more time. this time at connecticut avenue. it should not hopefully affect traffic here on the north side as you head toward 355. i'll be back with more coming up in a few minutes at 5:40. back to you. 5:33 now. the washington nationals one game away frbing eliminated from -- from being eliminated from the 2012 playoffs. is it because teddy won?

i'm just saying. >> for whatever the reasonable the team was crushed yesterday by the cardinals 8-0. kristin fisher joins us live from outside nats park with more. we want the meaning let's go nats to mean let's get going, not leaving the playoffs. >> reporter: let's get going. the nats, they got to win. they've got to win or their season is over. it's just that simple. i was at yesterday's game and you could feel the crowd just begging for a run. we wanted it so bad. especially since this is the first playoff game played at nationals park. but that run never came. cardinals beat the nats 8-0. it was a blow out but it didn't have to be. yesterday the nats stranded 11 runners and they stranded 30 runners over the last three games against the cardinals. you just can't do that and expect to win against last year's world series champs. for fans, frustrating is and understatement. after the game our matt jablow caught up with some disappointed but still hopeful

let teddy lose. apparently he will not be spending any time behind bars. a are forker aide to vincent -- a former aide to vincent gray was sus tense -- was sentenced to 20 months of probation after admitting his role in the involvement in a scandal surrounding the mayor's campaign. he faced up to six months under his plea agreement but his lawyers asked for probation and community service and that's what he got. jessica doyle is back. she is watching your money of course. >> it's that time of year when we all have to make tough choices about health care for ourselves and our families. and jessica is going to make this understandable and entertaining. >> and exciting. that's right. stick with me, people. it comes at the end. two words that probably will not come up as a hot topic. >> your mike. >> oh, my microphone fell down. >> you can borrow mine. >> thank you. it's somewhere in my jacket.

>> that was part of the excitement. >> that's exciting, people. two words that probably won't come up as a hot topic during the next dinner party, open enrollment but it's so important. the good news here, choosing your care coverage could be a lot less stressful this year. a couple of changes you need to know about. because of the 2010 health care law, comparing health care plans should be a lot easier. information packets will now include simple summaries of coverage costs. that's going to make it easier to compare and contrast your company's plan. and it will be easier to compare those options with your spouse's plans and individual policies. women's coverage also about to get a lot better, too. insurers must now fully cover some preventive health benefits. annual wellness visits, contraceptive services. also coverage for things like screening for gestational diabetes, breast feeding support and help for domestic violence. there are also more plans to choose from. many employers will be offering

more than the basic coverage of individual and family coverage. new options will include employee plus spouse and employee plus children. flexible spending account allowances are shrinking. you're only going to be able to set aside $2500 pretax to cover health care costs. that's down from the current $5,000 limit. one thing to consider, if you have medical procedures, you want done that fit the current rules for flexible spending, schedule the procedures now. use up those funds. because i promised you a big payoff for paying attention to open enrollment, here's some kittens. >> you're kidding. >> no, air not. >> look it there. >> we appreciate that because we don't like the bad news. >> we're all about giving people what they want. >> that is hysterical. >> that's called surprise kitten. we watch that on a daily basis

clouds across minnesota, north dakota. this is kind of the boundary between some much colder air up in canada and some cool air down by us. in fact, it's cold enough to see a little snow this morning in michigan. i point this out because as these storms come across the northern part of the country, they're dragging cold fronts toward us. we're going to have a couple of days around here where temperatures will be on the cool side. low 60s today. mid-60s tomorrow. low 60s saturday. but there's also some warm air down in texas. i expect to get that at least in here for monday or sunday and monday. so in the short term, the fronts will come, one tomorrow. any showers with it stay in the mountains to our north. so not any significant weather. just reinforces the coolness that has moved in for today. looking at our forecast, expecting a high of 63. a pleasant afternoon. winds turn southwest 5 to 10 after northwesterly winds this morning. tonight we're into the 40s. maybe a few upper 30s. tomorrow breezy, 66. saturday cool, 62. in fact, saturday morning,

don't be surprised if you get a lot of patchy frost around. by sunday, though, certainly the better day of the weekend, warmer. skins are home. ravens are home, 75. monday also 75 with a chance for a shower. it is 5:51. here comes monika samtani with timesaver traffic. it's kind of a good news- bad news situation. first of all the good news is that the accident that happened overnight eastbound route 50 after the bay bridge has completely been cleared. i was on the phone with state highway. they tell me that all lanes are open. but here on the north side of town, the beltway outer loop side on the ramp to northbound route 355, you'll want to watch out. there's a truck that hit a pole. they have the ramp blocked for a while. we're making some phone calls to see if they've been able to let some traffic through. in the meantime keep that in mind. let's take a live look at the beltway at university boulevard. this is fine. again it's up ahead on the outer loop heading westbound on 495 trying to exit on to northbound 355. let's go back over to our maps. this time a look first of all on the inbound side of i-66.
